Supreme Court Settles Kpandai Election Dispute, Restores Mandate

The Supreme Court of Ghana has finally brought clarity and calm to the long-running parliamentary election dispute in Kpandai, delivering a decisive ruling that reinforces constitutional order and electoral certainty.

In a majority decision, the apex court quashed the earlier ruling of the Tamale High Court, which had annulled the December 7 parliamentary election results and ordered a rerun. The Supreme Court held that the High Court erred in law, particularly on issues of jurisdiction and the constitutional timelines governing election petitions.

By overturning the rerun order, the Court restored the mandate of Matthew Nyindam, affirming him as the duly elected Member of Parliament for the Kpandai Constituency. This ruling effectively ends months of political uncertainty, legal battles, and heightened tension within the constituency.

Prior to the final judgment, the Supreme Court had already directed the Electoral Commission to suspend all preparations for a rerun, signaling the seriousness with which it viewed the constitutional questions raised. The final verdict has now validated that caution and reaffirmed the supremacy of the Constitution in electoral matters.

Beyond Kpandai, this decision sends a powerful message across the country: election disputes must strictly follow constitutional procedures and timelines. Courts, political actors, and stakeholders are reminded that democracy thrives not just on votes, but on respect for the rule of law.

For the people of Kpandai, the ruling marks a return to stability and representation. For Ghana, it is yet another demonstration of a judiciary willing to stand firm in defense of democratic principles.

Justice has spoken.

Democracy has prevailed.
